A Comment on War

The United States, or more accurately the ruling class of the United States, has just launched missiles against the Syrian government. It is doubtful that this will be the only act of aggression against Syria by the Trump administration, and it is certain that Syria will not be the only state bombed by this administration or administrations to come.

As long as there is a United States of America there will be bombs dropping. The U.S. is the largest arms dealers in the world. It is spending 1 trillion dollars to upgrade its nuclear arsenal. It is currently bombing 7 countries. It has 800 military bases around the world.

Moreover, as long as capitalism exists there will be war. Attacks carried out by the United States have only one purpose: the maintenance of its global hegemony over the capitalist system. No matter how many times they claim humanitarianism it doesn’t make it true. All of the massacres, all of the refugees, all of the suffering and destruction exist for the sake of imperialist domination, for the success of a handful of wealthy individuals competing with their rivals for power. War exists for this reason and this reason only.

The capitalists and their politicians do not care about the Syrian people, they only care about power and profit. They won’t show you the children that die at the hands of the U.S. military, or the massacres conducted with U.S. funding and support, or the bodies of refugees washed up on the beach. Instead they will use Syrians as props by invoking the images of dead children and claiming that this is why they drop bombs. They will subject us to celebrations of U.S. military supremacy. They will cover up their crimes with spectacle and nationalism; crimes committed for the maintenance of U.S. primacy in the world capitalist system.

It has been said that humanity has a choice: “socialism or barbarism”. Every bomb dropped is a testimony to barbarism. We have the technology, the skills, and the raw materials to create a world without want and without war. We are capable of so much more than this organized slaughter.

We must organize against the war mongers that run this country. We cannot allow them to get away with the destruction and misery they have caused and are causing to millions of innocent people. We must defeat them and fulfill our potential.
